Sustainability Manager/Food Service Manager

Lead, grow and inspire! Sodexo's Education Division is seeking a Sustainability Manager to support University of Vermont Dining. Based out The University of Vermont (UVM), the Sustainability Manager will work with local and sustainable food purchasing and overall sustainability in dining services at UVM. This is an exciting opportunity for a qualified candidate to contribute to growing the sustainable food movement in higher education. University of Vermont is a prestigious University committed to sustainability and local food purchasing.

The successful candidate will maintain systems for benchmarking and tracking current purchasing practices with the ultimate goal of increasing local, community-based, and 3rd party certified food purchases. The Sustainability Manager will also help establish short and long-term goals, complete annual reporting and work closely with local food producers and campus community members (especially students) to raise awareness of the importance of local and sustainable food choices.

The candidate will also work closely with the Vermont First Coordinator and support academic class projects and engagement. Acts as a key leader in the launch of the sustainability collaboration space and learning lab in a state of the art farm to table dining hall opening Summer of 2017.

Skills Needed:

  • Self-starter with excellent communication skills and the ability to effectively manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.

  • Experience in managing food service in an education environment.

  • Able to work independently.

  • Detail oriented and well-organized.

Desired Experience:

  • Three or more years of experience in local and sustainable food related issues.

  • Administrative and program management experience.

  • Solid interpersonal skills and the ability to work with a diverse group of people.

  • The ability to accomplish results in a designed time frame.

  • Be comfortable in a fast moving/changing environment and have the ability to handle multiple priorities.

  • Have the ability to effectively motivate students and community members to action.

Position Summary

Responsible for managing multi-functional food service areas in a single account/unit. May assume General Manager's (GM) responsibilities and authority in his/her absence. Assists in maintenance of cash control and payroll records. Assists in supporting the financial/Human Resources (HR) functions. Maintains customer satisfaction and good public relations.

Qualifications & Requirements

Basic Education Requirement - High School Diploma or GED

Basic Management Experience - 1 year

Basic Functional Experience - 2 years work experience in food or culinary services including restaurants, fast food, vending, catering services, institutional services, mall food courts, etc.
